This recipe calls for spinach – of course you could just as easily use kale – berries, bananas and dark chocolate (or raw cacao powder if you are being super healthy).

Spinach is a rich source of beta-carotene, which our bodies then convert to vitamin A and use for our immune system. It’s also contains lutein and zeaxanthin – antioxidants which help to protect us against age-related eye disorders.

Bananas are great nutritionally being high in fiber, folate and vitamin C, and rich in potassium. To boot they are one of the most popular fruit on planet earth.

What you need:

  • 2 cups nut or soy milk
  • 1 cup of raspberries or strawberries
  • 2 bananas
  • 2 cups of spinach
  • 3 tablespoons of finely chopped dark chocolate or raw cacao powder (for a healthy version)

Serves two

Make this smoothie:

  1. First place the milk and spinach in the blender and mix until smooth. It should take 30 seconds to a minute – the exact time will depend on the blender’s power. Always start at a slow speed, to get the liquid and greens moving, before gradually increasing to full speed.
  2. Switch off the blender and add the berries, bananas and chocolate or cacao powder. Blend this all together for another 30 seconds to a minute, until it looks smooth and delicious. Of course if you have pre-programmed smoothie cycle on your blender use that instead.
  3. Pour and enjoy immediately.

Experimenting with smoothie recipes is lots of fun and it’s pretty hard to go wrong. With this one you could try adding half a teaspoon of nutmeg or cinnamon or you could swap the berries for i pitted cherries.

Tips:

Whatever type of berries you are using make sure you pick them carefully, checking the punnet for mould and moisture.
